On The Road Again

“Find out the reason that commands you to write; see whether it has spread its roots into the very depth of your heart; confess to yourself you would have to die if you were forbidden to write.”
Rainer Maria Rilke

I feel as if I'm finally making headway towards certain goals. Yesterday evening I was informed of a new art showcasing website. I am already part of such a website, and quite like being there. It is a nice community, I've become familiar with a few people and receive feedback on my work. However it has grown enormously, so I thought it might help to be also part of a new, smaller website where I could get more views on my art. The new website is, at the moment, invite only. Luckily, I received an invite, and am now a member! I have not uploaded much as of yet, and need to sort a few things out, but soon enough I shall be sharing the link to my page.

I'm quite happy about some responses I've been getting over here. I'm not always sure if my blog is being read, but the drawings seem to please some people. I have therefore decided I shall be making postcards in the foreseeable future, so if that is of interest to anyone, be sure to keep updated here.

I think it is important I focus on doing, rather than thinking. This applies to a few things in my life, but I am thinking mostly of my blog. I tend to think too hard about what I could write, wanting it to be good, whilst having a lot of thoughts. Lots of thoughts combined with a desire, almost need, to write has led me to think that perhaps I am making things more complicated than they could be. (I tend to do that, apparently.) You learn a language by talking, you learn to draw by drawing. You learn to understand poetry by reading it. And writing? Practice makes perfect. By writing, you improve your writing, so this in effect is what I shall be doing. Notice I mentioned poetry in there? That is another of my goals, to further understand poetry, and read more of it. At the moment I am studying John Donne and Philip Larkin, so that's already a start. As for language, well, ideally I should have already started learning a new one at the beginning of this year, as well as getting on with my Spanish, but I think I shall leave those goals on the back burner for now, though I have by no means given up.

In between looking for jobs, attending English Literature classes and sleeping, I shall therefore attempt to improve my poetry, both reading and writing, actually update this blog more than once every three months, and keep drawing.

Perhaps it is the joy of discovering Cabin Pressure (Benedict Cumberbatch has the sort of voice you would listen to even if he was reading the phonebook), and finding all sorts of (probably accidental) Sherlock references, but I have had a strange burst of motivation. I actually feel like I could get some good stuff done. It is like standing in freezing water for ages, waiting for the wave to come so you can surf. I think I shall try and catch that wave.

And you know what? I have tried to surf before, in Cornwall. It was difficult, it was tiring, it was cold, it took a lot of effort, but it was so worth it.

I hope to write again pretty soon.. So...
"Catch.. you.. later.."

  1. Unfortunately I don't quite have the "I would die without it" drive to write. But I think there are many good writers who procrastinate ferociously.

I've never surfed but I'm sure it's satisfying to get somewhat out of the freezing water and onto the board!

  2. I don't think I have that either, which is just as well, since I spend many days thinking about writing, but not doing it. ;)

Surfing is great fun. I didn't actually stand up or even kneel on the board, but even lying on it and whooshing back towards the beach is incredibly satisfying. :)
(Until you get lost on the beach ;)
