Dialogue Between a Stone and a Star

It's day two of NaPoWriMo, and I'm back with a late night poem! (If you consider this time to be late. I suppose it depends!). I've been reading Stones and Stars, dipping in and out, since I never read poetry collections cover to cover, and the poems are really lovely.
Then, last night, I couldn't sleep, and at around 2 am I had an idea for a poem - a conversation between a stone and a star. At first I had the idea that the stone would be lamenting its lack of qualities to the star, and then I realised it would be much nicer to have the stone itself know of its qualities.. Yes it's all a little silly, but the idea stayed with me all day. I very much hope you like it!

Dialogue Between a Stone and a Star

The Star:

I am above, dear stone, both in matter and place
I quite literally fill the whole of space.
I shine and give hope to lost souls in the dark
And lost travellers look to me for support, guidance.
I'm bright, I'm beautiful, I'm a poem in motion
And don't people say: 'friends are like stars', that's the notion.
I am vast though look tiny, I paint the night sky.
I'm a horse, and a bear, and so many more.
And you, what are you, but a measly stone?
To be stepped on, and thrown.

The Stone:

Dear star, you are right - you clearly shine bright.
But mistaken, you are too, for I the stone
Am no mere tool to be thrown.
And by day, what are you? All but forgotten
You are dazzled by all that is modern.
City lights, city nights - where are you then?
You are never there for the grey city men.
Have you ever seen a child on a beach
Look intently for pebbles to collect?
I am a trophy, a game, I can skip on a lake
A poem to be held, admired, and kept.
Dear star, you are bright, but oh so very vain
And too far, too far, for the common men.

Disclaimer: These are poems I won't be spending a lot of time on. As such, I don't expect perfection (neither do I need it). However feel free to tell me what you think about them, and if you enjoy certain lines more than others - I'm quite OK with constructive criticism!

  1. I really liked the concept of your poem. It's nice to consider two objects finding their value no matter their place in the universe of life.

  2. This is very much like an old fable with the dialogue of who has the highest worth... wonder what the sun would say..

    1. Ah, interesting. I probably have heard of the fable but can't remember it right now.. I think the sun would say that without him, there wouldn't be any human to enjoy either stone or star.. haha!

  3. I guess that it is a good thing both the star and the stone are happy with their situations and the purpose of their existence.

    1. I agree! They both have their own purposes :) Thanks for your comment!

  4. It is good when each appreciates who they are rather than wishing to be something else. The stone can be a worthy stone & the star a worthy star. No competition! Smiles. An interesting theme in this poem.

    1. The star definitely needs to learn humility, but I do love my stars all the same! And I was very much the child who looked for stones. ;) Thanks!

  8. an interesting concept, this dialogue. both have their place in the grand scheme of things in the universe. the star is a bit arrogant, and i am glad the stone is able to bring it down a notch with its wit.

All the best for your NaPoWriMo! can't say the same for me, only 2 poems so far. :)

    i write too
